Everyone counts! Anchorage community organizations are working with us this week to check camps, doorways and other sleeping spots for the annual nationwide Point in Time Count of our unhoused neighbors. Those who are unsheltered are asked where they spent the night of Monday, Jan. 26. Our community also is asking the reason they weren’t in a shelter. These counts are mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and guide federal funding for efforts addressing homelessness. The Anchorage Continuum of Care with support of our team at the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness and the Institute for Community Alliances — the data experts — lead the Anchorage effort. The count covers those sleeping outdoors whether in a tent, in a snow shelter, under tarps, on the ground or in a self-made pallet home; people camping in a car or an RV without hookups; and those staying in shelters or transitional, temporary housing. (Not part of the count: People who are doubling up or couch surfing.) Thank you, volunteers! For many, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day on, not a day off. This national holiday is dedicated to honoring Dr. King's legacy through community service and volunteerism. We appreciate the volunteers who gave back today at the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness! We assembled about 300 packets for next week's Point in Time Count of those experiencing homelessness. We always provide snacks and other essentials to those who are unsheltered and next week we are including some food items plus gloves, socks, a hat, handwarmers and an emergency poncho. Special volunteer event! Join us on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 19, to assemble items for the upcoming Point-in-Time Count of people experiencing homelessness. We are switching it up from our usual time to bring in volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a morning of service. Volunteer events generally are now on the first Monday of the month, 5:30 to 7 p.m., with additional times as needed. Thank you volunteers! You help our street outreach efforts immensely! People often ask about bringing children. We welcome kids but ask that they be old enough to help or that you bring an extra adult to watch them. We aren't able to offer childcare. If someone doesn't have a place in shelter or needs to get warm during the day, these are great options. Pro tip for bus riders!
