With coordinated, outcome-driven approaches, communities across the country are helping people along a path to stability and safety. Nearly 400 people have been housed in downtown Atlanta. A 45% drop in unsheltered homelessness in Denver. Real stats and real change. Our colleagues at Community Solutions took part in a panel of housing and homelessness experts recently at the Solutions for Housing Communications conference in Washington, D.C. Thank you to state Rep. Genevieve Mina and the House Community and Regional Affairs Committee for legislation that will remove a significant barrier for people experiencing homelessness if passed by the full House and Senate! This morning the committee passed HB 334, sponsored by Rep. Mina to provide free state IDs for individuals experiencing homelessness. (Unhoused individuals already can get a free birth certificate.) This may seem small but imagine how hard it would be to the navigate life if you didn't have an ID. Anyone who is literally homeless would qualify. Our organization among others can provide that verification. Rep. Mina had proposed free IDs for young adults experiencing homelessness and the committee approved an amendment to expand the opportunity to all ages. Each person who lost their life outdoors in Anchorage last year was a neighbor, a friend, a family member. Even one death is too many. These losses are a painful reminder of the urgency of this work and the stakes for our community. We were honored to attend the vigil on April 4 at First Christian Church, standing with community members to remember and honor those we lost by reflecting on their humanity and recommitting to solutions that ensure everyone has a safe place to live. We carry their memory forward in our work every day. (Pictured: Words of hope and remembrance shared at the event.) #NeverForgotten
