This Wednesday afternoon, April 29, there will be an opportunity for public testimony on the state capital budget before the House Finance Committee — and your voice is urgently needed.
We’re calling on community members, advocates and partners to urge restoration of Homeless Assistance Program (HAP) funds. These funds are critical to keeping people housed, preventing displacement and supporting vulnerable households across our communities. The governor's budget proposed a 50% cut to $5 million, down from $10.15 million in the current year.
⏰Time: Hearing begins at 4:30 p.m. Call in starting at 4:20 p.m. Don't wait too long or testimony may be closed.
🎯Focus: Restore HAP funding in the capital budget
How to call in: If you are in Anchorage, 907-563-9085. If you are in Juneau, 907-586-9085. Anywhere else in Alaska, 844-586-9085. Be prepared to give your name, organization if applicable, the committee (House Finance) and the bill (SB214). You'll be put in the queue.
In person: Go to your local Legislative Information Office.
Do you ride on People Mover or would you like to? Let your voice be heard by ranking the public transit projects that best suit your needs! The survey closes this Sunday, April 26, so don't delay. With an event as big as Project Homeless Connect, it's never too early to start planning! We want to make this year's resource fair the best it can be for our unhoused neighbors. Last year, double the number of people from prior years came in search of supports and supplies. The line stretched around the block for hours! We already have ideas to address the line. How else can we level up this important event, set for Oct. 26 at the Egan Center? If you want to help us plan, and can commit to regularly attending bimonthly planning meetings, let us know by emailing PHC@aceh.org. Thank you in advance! With coordinated, outcome-driven approaches, communities across the country are helping people along a path to stability and safety. Nearly 400 people have been housed in downtown Atlanta. A 45% drop in unsheltered homelessness in Denver. Real stats and real change. Our colleagues at Community Solutions took part in a panel of housing and homelessness experts recently at the Solutions for Housing Communications conference in Washington, D.C. Thank you to state Rep. Genevieve Mina and the House Community and Regional Affairs Committee for legislation that will remove a significant barrier for people experiencing homelessness if passed by the full House and Senate! This morning the committee passed HB 334, sponsored by Rep. Mina to provide free state IDs for individuals experiencing homelessness. (Unhoused individuals already can get a free birth certificate.) This may seem small but imagine how hard it would be to the navigate life if you didn't have an ID. Anyone who is literally homeless would qualify. Our organization among others can provide that verification. Rep. Mina had proposed free IDs for young adults experiencing homelessness and the committee approved an amendment to expand the opportunity to all ages.
